Chaplain’s Chatter

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ the new creation has come. The old is gone, the new is here!”

2 Corinthians 5:17

A few weeks ago I had to make the difficult decision to throw out my running shoes. Those shoes had been with me for a number of years through a home renovation, gardening, hundreds of miles of walking and all sorts of everyday use (interesting, I don’t think I ever ran in them). They were comfortable, it seems as though they knew every contour of my foot and were like old friends. It is true that the sides were worn through so my toes poked out, there was no grip on the soles and the heel didn’t really supply any support but still, it was a sad day when they finally went into the garbage can. However, after getting new shoes I have discovered that the new ones have padding, support, grip and come to think of it, they smell quite a bit better too!

Every person who has come to the point of making a decision for Christ, they are faced with a similar decision. The life they lived may not be the best, things don’t work as they should and maybe it just stinks – but it is familiar and as such, it is comfortable. When confronted with faith, they are challenged to a new way of life, a new way of thinking, and a new way of living, which can be a scary thing. The choice is clear, to remain as they are or allow the grace of God to wash over them and create something brand new.

Here is what I know –  from the vantage point of wearing new shoes and looking back at the old worn ones I threw away, there is no comparison and from the vantage point of living a new life in Christ and comparing it to the old? Well, let’s face it, there is no comparison at all!

Let us live today and every day in the wonder of the new life found in Christ.
